Marine Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (MBB), a teacher professional development program held 2004-2009, used authentic research as the framework to deliver science content in marine science, biotechnology and bioinformatics. The diagram on the left shows proportionately how the content and skills of the MBB are positioned within these knowledge domains. Most of the content overlaps all three areas with some topics being unique to each. Click the image areas to read more information about the MBB program domains.

MBB Program Components Diagram

During the MBB professional development program, middle- and high school science teacher participants worked with the science content in a research setting supplemented with educational technology experiences designed for teachers and STEM career information for students.  The teacher participants built on current research in the Marine Science, Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics domains and then integrated teaching and learning practices into lesson plans they could use in their own classrooms. The MBB program process is shown in the diagram above.

The products of the MBB program are available on this Web site and include both the program materials and teacher created products that can be used in the classroom.
